What to expect from Couples Counselling and Relationship Therapy

As well as counselling individuals – both adults and children – some of our counsellors offer relationship therapy working with couples. If your relationship is going through a tricky patch, or there are things that you’d like to raise with your partner but don’t quite know how, then couples counselling can be a way to explore things together.

We asked one of our couples therapists what they would say are the things that people could expect from relationship therapy, here’s what they had to say…

“It’s about helping you gain insight into your relationship, and supporting you to identify and work through your relationship differences. We’ll look at the issues together and discover how and why they have become an issue for each of you. It’s about helping both parties gain insight into what’s really going on and understand the part that they’re each playing. We work to understand why you argue and perhaps why roles in the relationship may have become dysfunctional. There’s also an important element of looking at communication styles – how you both recover from an argument and looking at listening to hear instead of listening to respond.”

Small Charity Week – Can you help us?

It’s small charity week this week, raising the profile of small charities. We’ve been going as a registered charity since 2003 and the support of the local community has been invaluable in helping us make counselling affordable to those that need it here in Telford.

Later this week we’ve got a team coming in from a local business to help us redecorate some of our rooms, and last year the local branch of the Co Op raised over £6,000 for us.

We’re always on the look out on ways to raise funds and help us on our mission to improve mental health, so if you’ve any ideas then we’d love to hear them. We also would love some more trustees on board to help us with the strategic vision for the organisation, there’s more info on our trustees page here if you think you’d be great for our team!

Counselling Children and Young People

Does your child seem upset, sad, angry or anxious but you can’t understand why? Has your child’s behaviour changed? Are you feeling concerned or worried? Children and young people generally express their feelings through actions, but this can become scary and out of control if left unexplored. 

In counselling we can explore your child’s thoughts and feelings in a neutral environment so that they might work through their difficulties. 

Our specialist children’s counsellors can help your child explore what’s going on for them through play or talking in a way that helps them process whatever they might be struggling with.  As well as working from our friendly rooms in Telford, some of our counsellors are based within local schools and we’re happy to liaise with you to work out the best way for your child to access our services.

Launch of Consultancy Services: free mental health training!

Whilst much work has been done to reduce the stigma about talking of mental health with friends and family, in the workplace it is a different matter. Only 13% of those diagnosed with a mental health issue feel able to share this with their manager.

On Tuesday 9th July 2019 we are holding a launch event for our consultancy services aimed at local HR managers and business professionals. As part of the evening we’ll be holding a short presentation on having difficult conversations if you’re worried about someone’s mental health. It’s an opportunity to come meet some of the counsellors here at Impact Telford, network with other local professionals as well as find out a little more about ways to support your team. There’ll be cake and nibbles too!

Back to school for our counsellors!

As professional counsellors our team are all required to undertake continued professional development (CPD) and attend additional training each year. It’s one of the values in the BACP ethical framework and a way of keeping our skills up to date as well as giving us the opportunity to look at our particular areas of interest in more depth.

Just in the last few months our counsellors have undertaken training in a wide variety of areas such as:

  • Makaton,
  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)
  • Self Harm
  • Suicide awareness
  • Maastricht Interviewing (a technique for working with those who hear voices or are diagnosed with schizophrenia)
  • Motivational interviewing
  • Using play in counselling
  • EMDR
  • Solution focused therapy
  • Working with those who have suffered sexual violence.

MHAW2019: Body Image, let’s get comfortable

The theme for Mental Health Awareness week this year is body image and we shared a blog post earlier this week. about some of the links between body image and mental health

The Mental Health Foundation have asked for people to share pics of a time that they felt comfortable in their skin under the tag #bebodykind. Here are a few pics from three of the team here at Impact Telford, shared by some of our counsellors and office staff. Sadly only one pic is recent (from last year), one is a decade old and the other a bit further back. This post prompted discussion in our office with sharing of how insecure we can sometimes feel about how we look.

Our Team is made up of real people, we might be counsellors and psychotherapists and well versed in mental health but that doesn’t mean we don’t still have some hang ups about our bodies. But counselling and psychotherapy can help: one thing we are passionate about is giving people an opportunity to explore their emotions and understand how things like body image can impact their mental health. Gambling Recovery Course: taking a break

Our succcessful gambling recovery course for those struggling with problem gambling or gambling addiction is taking a break for a little while. The course, which covers topics such as self esteem and understanding your triggers, will be back in a few months here in Telford.

In the meantime our trained Gamcare counsellors are still available for one to one therapy sessions, and we have also opened a waiting list for those wanting to take part in the group sessions once they restart. Body Image (Mental Health Awareness week 2019)

The Mental Health Foundation have chosen Body Image as the theme for Mental Health Awareness week 2019 and their CEO talks here about why. A recent survey shows that a third of British adults have felt anxious or depressed because of the way that they think or feel about their body.

As counsellors we regularly see clients where their body image plays a part in their mental health issues, one of our therapists says “Body image is often not the immediate issue that the client comes to explore, but many times it will crop up as part of their anxiety or depression. It can be really powerful to tackle the shame and guilt that people feel about how they look and examine their feelings of not being perfect or good enough.”

Stereotypically it is often presumed that it’s only young women that have poor body image, but the survey found that it affects people regardless of age, sex or gender with 20% of those aged 55 or older feeling anxious because of their body image. Our counsellors have worked with children as young as 9 with eating disorders as well as with both children and adults who self harm because of their feelings about how they look.

Almost one in three people have felt so stressed about their body image that they’ve been unable to cope. The way you view and think about your body and the way that you think others view your looks can deeply affect our mental health whatever your age, gender, sexuality or ethnicity.
